...And Boys, too!

A nother curious thing one can discover when dissecting the Muslim Paradise is the presence of other beings, besides the Houris: perpetually young servant boys, beautiful as pearls (Qur’an 52:24). The Qur’an always describes them for their youthful beauty:

And round about them will serve youths of perpetual freshness: If thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered Pearls.

— Qur’an 76:19 (Yusuf Ali)

I understand that any good establishment—the Muslim Paradise included—should feature a pristine looking staff, but I don’t know how to deal with the fact that every time these young servant boys are mentioned in the Qur’an, their description is almost sexual in nature, not very dissimilar to when the Qur’an describes the Houris. And the Qur’an never addresses the female reader, so the young servant boys are certainly not meant for the pleasures of the female believer. Qur’an commentator Ibn al-Qayyim says that they are likened to pearls because of their beauty and fair skin (which was a sexual ideal in Muhammad’s time, just like in the description of Zaynab, the wife of Muhammad’s adopted son Zayd).

We know that homosexuality is forbidden in Islam, but we don’t know if pederasty with young adolescent boys is one of the things that Allah will make lawful for the believer, once he has entered paradise. What we cannot discount is the fact that pederasty has been a big part of the culture at the time of Muhammad. Prominent Arab Poet of the 8th -century, Abu Nuwas, glorified the pleasures of sodomy in the context of pederasty in some of his works:

O the joy of sodomy!

So now be sodomites, you Arabs.

Turn not away from it—therein is wondrous pleasure.

Take some coy lad with kiss-curls twisting on his temple

and ride as he stands like some gazelle standing to her mate.

A lad whom all can see girt with sword

and belt not like your whore who has to go veiled.

Make for smooth-faced boys and do your

very best to mount them, for women are the mounts of the devils
